Similarities

* Both Charles Ball and Frederick Douglas successfully escaped slavery.

* Both Charles Ball and Frederick Douglas were born slaves in Maryland.

* Both men lost their mother's at a young age. Frederick's mother died when he was 10, Charles' mother died when he was 4.


Differences

* Frederick Douglas, with some hep from his Master's wife, taught himself how to read and write. Charles Ball's narrative shows no indication of his ever learning how to read.


* Frederick Douglas was a religious man, Charles Ball was not.
